Allotment gardener harvesting vegetables in Wakefield, YorkshireAbout Keir – Allotment Gardener in Wakefield

I’m Keir, an experienced allotment gardener in Wakefield, Yorkshire, sharing practical UK growing advice and straightforward monthly sowing guides for everyday gardeners.

My love of growing started on my grandfather’s allotment. He had a proper plot — beans climbing tall canes, potatoes earthed up in neat rows, and the unmistakable smell of tomatoes ripening in his greenhouse. I spent summers there as a kid and never really lost the bug.

Today, I grow at home. My back garden is roughly the size of a traditional allotment plot, and every square metre is put to work. Raised beds, a greenhouse, and containers along the fence all help us grow as much of our own food as possible — and keep the food bills down at the same time.

As a working landscape gardener, I understand plants and soil. But I also know most people who want to grow their own food aren’t horticultural experts. They simply want to know what to sow this weekend, what will actually grow in the UK climate, and how to avoid common mistakes.

That’s why I created The Allotment UK.

Everything here is written from a real UK perspective — based on Yorkshire growing conditions, UK seed varieties, British weather patterns and our unpredictable frosts. What works on a plot in the North of England is very different from what works in California, and much of the gardening advice online simply doesn’t apply to us.

I won’t pretend I get it right every time. Slugs happen. Late frosts happen. Crops fail.

But after 40 years of growing, you develop a feel for what works — and more importantly, what to do when things go wrong. That’s the practical experience I share here.

If you want clear, honest allotment gardening advice tailored to UK conditions, you’re in the right place.

My Growing Approach

Over the years, I’ve learned that successful allotment gardening isn’t about perfection — it’s about consistency. Sowing at the right time, preparing the soil properly, and understanding your local climate make far more difference than expensive tools or complicated techniques.

Growing in Wakefield means dealing with cold springs, wet spells and the occasional surprise frost. Choosing hardy varieties and sticking to a sensible sowing schedule makes all the difference. That’s why I focus heavily on monthly sowing guides tailored to UK conditions.

Why UK-Specific Advice Matters

A lot of gardening advice online comes from climates that simply don’t match ours. Longer summers, milder winters and completely different soil conditions can make guidance misleading for British growers.

As an allotment gardener in Wakefield, I test what I recommend in real Yorkshire conditions. If it survives here, it’ll likely survive most UK plots.
